The MK5 Thunderflash is a single-shot Thunderflash device (124 dB at 4.5 m). It operates using a rotating safety cap friction system. Once lit, the burn time is 6 to 7 seconds; therefore, it must be disposed of immediately in a predetermined safe area. The MK5 consists of a thick cardboard tube that ruptures upon firing, releasing a light smoke.
